Driving South Hokkaido in Dec?

Postby waitressvn on Fri Sep 18, 2009 9:05 am

I was thinking of visiting Noboribetsu and Lake Toya in the 2nd week of December. Wanted to see Hell valley and take a ride up Mt. Usu ropeway. Plan to rent a car from Sapporo and drive. Will there be much snow on the roads? Can I do the return trip comfortably in a day?

I haven't been in Hokkaido but I have lived in north of the main island.

It snows usually in mountains quite much and many times the mountain roads are closed during the winter.
Few years have been snowy in Hokkaido.

If you are planning the trip you should be careful. (atleast of the bears ;))
I hope the best and please share your answers after returning.
