Hi, elfenproll. I'm an American who lived in Japan for a few years (though I never made it to Okinawa). I enjoyed it a lot, for many of the reasons Cooney talks about in his vlogs. Living in a place where many of the things you've always taken for granted are different is exciting.
>1) how often do you meet with people who can speak English (conversation) in Japan?
Well, since I was a teacher I met a lot of people who had an interest in English and spoke it very well. Among those I got to know outside of work I don't remember any who were very fluent, but (at least in Tokyo) I bumped into quite a few strangers who seemed to speak excellent English.
My favourite memory on that was a visit to a small village in Shimane. A girl (I think she was nine) was shy at first, but when I left she suddenly shouted: "Don't go, baby!" I always wondered where she learned it.
>2) what was your first impression of Japan?
I got asked that a lot when I first went there. It's hard to say. I was living in a small town in Saitama (almost to Gunma), and so things were even more different from home than a big city would have been. I suppose, though, that it was how small things were compared to the US. Houses, streets, gardens or cars, everything was smaller and closer together than I was used to. Of course, when I got back to the States everything seemed too big for a while.
