Definitely, indeed I've known some Japanese visiting the States who were really uncomfortable wearing their shoes into a house.

You also often have to leave your shoes at the entrance of public buildings. Typically they'll be a set of shelves to put them on and a supply of slippers to wear while inside. A lot of people have similar slippers in their homes, but socks are also acceptable there.

Bathrooms often have a dedicated set or sets of slippers, sometimes with some fairly amusing pictures on them (at least to my eye).

PS: I forgot to mention that tatami rooms are yet another case; you have to doff your house slippers before entering them. Footwear in Japan is complicated.

Un, I agree!

Many Japanese are strict about the cleanness. That's why they have new slippers everywhere!!!
Also REALLY cold floors help the using of the slippers. Who wants to step on cold floor.

I take of shoes because, who would want their floor to be made dirty or worn down by shoes (less cleaning.)
But in emergencies, who cares..? Japanese do :D (Just like MONK)
